This accusation comes after Newsom vehemently defended Biden back in June 2023, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity that Biden was sharp and dismissing Republican rivals as the “JV team.” Newsom has maintained he wasn’t aware of any cognitive issues.
But critics point to a bizarre incident back in January, just before Biden left office. While visiting a wildfire-ravaged area in Los Angeles, Newsom got into a tense exchange with a resident whose daughter’s school burned down. When pressed on the state’s slow response, Newsom whipped out his phone, declaring, “I am literally talking to the president right now to specifically answer the question of what we can do for you and your daughter.”
Sure, Newsom’s team later claimed he really did talk to Biden, securing federal funds for the cleanup. But the timing and Newsom’s defensive posture raised eyebrows, fueling speculation about whether the call was staged or if Newsom was just trying to dodge tough questions by invoking the then-President. The BBC reporter’s recent jab suggests Newsom might have been playing defense for Biden for longer than previously thought.
