Get ready for the final descent into Gilead. Hulu dropped the first episodes of the sixth and final season of its bleak dystopian drama, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” today, bringing the long-running saga to its beginning of the end. The show, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, imagines a chilling future America where fertile women are property forced to bear children for the ruling class.
While lauded by critics and showered with awards since its 2017 debut, the series has also drawn controversy. Interestingly, a recent Washington Post feature celebrating the final season conveniently overlooked star Elisabeth Moss’s well-known affiliation with Scientology.

The first three episodes are streaming now, with new installments landing every Tuesday until the finale airs on May 27th. Fans can expect to see familiar faces back for the last ride, including Moss as the relentless June Osborne, Yvonne Strahovski as the complicated Serena Joy Waterford, and Ann Dowd as the imposing Aunt Lydia.
This season promises more struggle against the totalitarian regime, with June, Luke (O.T. Fagbenle), and Moira (Samira Wiley) deep in the resistance. Meanwhile, characters like Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Aunt Lydia grapple with their past deeds as Gilead’s future hangs in the balance.
Viewers had to wait a bit longer for this conclusion, thanks to Hollywood strikes and Moss’s real-life pregnancy pushing back production. Filming finally kicked off last summer.
Over the years, the show’s imagery – those striking red cloaks and white bonnets – became potent symbols, frequently adopted by activists during protests over abortion and women’s rights, cementing the show’s place in fiery real-world political debates. Now, the curtain prepares to fall on the grim world of Gilead.
