Reports indicate the student pleaded with Escamilla to stop as the whistle caused distress. This shocking method of so-called discipline has led to serious charges.
Waco ISD acted swiftly, terminating Escamilla following her arrest. The district, already working on enhancing student safety after other recent incidents, stated its commitment to a safe learning environment but faces tough questions from concerned parents.
Escamilla is now facing the music, charged with felony child abuse. If convicted, she could spend up to 10 years behind bars for allegedly using a tool meant for animals on a vulnerable child.
The Waco community, especially parents of children with disabilities, is understandably outraged. There are growing calls for stricter oversight within the school district to ensure such disturbing incidents are never repeated. This case serves as a stark reminder of the need to protect our most vulnerable students from abuse.
