Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer seems to be showing the strain, if recent photos are anything to go by. A tweet comparing snaps of the governor taken just 20 days apart has folks asking: What happened here?

While Whitmer sailed to re-election in 2022 and Democrats took full control of Michigan’s state government for the first time in decades, the political landscape has shifted dramatically since then. Whitmer, a staunch supporter of Kamala Harris, had to publicly congratulate President Trump after his victory last November, calling for “unity.”
Could the stress of governing a state where the political winds have shifted nationally be taking its toll? Or maybe it’s the pressure of leading a state party that now holds all the reins – and all the responsibility – in Lansing after nearly 40 years out of full power.
Whitmer famously ruled Michigan with an iron fist during the COVID pandemic, imposing strict lockdowns she later eased. Now, navigating the state’s challenges under a second Trump administration, while managing her own party’s expectations, might explain any visible changes. Whatever the reason, the difference flagged online is hard to ignore.
