Well, look what we have here. President Trump, back in Michigan, decided to throw everyone a curveball by heaping praise on none other than Governor Gretchen Whitmer – yes, *that* Gretchen Whitmer. Remember all the fireworks between these two? Seems like someone’s burying the hatchet, at least for a day.
President Trump gives a big shoutout to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer:
"You know, I'm not supposed to do that. She's a Democrat. They say, don't do that. Don't have her here!"

The surprising kudos came during Trump’s visit to Selfridge Air National Guard Base near Detroit this week. He was there to deliver some great news: a new fighter jet mission is coming to Selfridge, securing its future and keeping thousands of jobs right here in America. The base had been sweating its future, but Trump’s move puts those worries to rest, swapping out old A-10s for modern jets.
Turns out, Governor Whitmer had been pushing hard behind the scenes for this. Trump, never one to shy away from a little drama, acknowledged the odd pairing right there on stage. “You know, I’m not supposed to do that,” he quipped about praising the Democrat governor. “They say, don’t do that. Don’t have her here!” But then, ditching the script, he added, “I want to thank you very much, Gretchen. Good Job!”
This is quite the turnaround from the days of COVID clashes and those infamous “lock her up” chants Trump echoed at a 2020 rally. Whitmer, for her part, stood alongside the President for the announcement, focused on the win for Michigan. The base pumps a whopping $850 million into the state’s economy and supports around 5,000 personnel, so keeping it strong is a big deal.
It’s a rare moment of across-the-aisle agreement, showing that when it comes to military strength and local jobs, even old rivals can find common ground. With Trump set for a rally in Macomb County next week, we’ll see if this truce holds. For now, chalk one up for getting things done.
