Jailed Chinese Church Burner’s Botched Escape Means More Prison Time

Talk about adding insult to injury. A Chinese national already serving time for torching a historic Baptist church and illegally possessing a firearm decided prison wasn’t for her – and now she’s facing even more time behind bars.

Xiaoqin Yan, 30, was slapped with an indictment for escaping federal custody after a brief taste of freedom last December.

Back in 2021, Yan, who had overstayed her visa, hauled duffel bags filled with gasoline into the First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and set the place ablaze, causing major damage. Surveillance footage caught her red-handed. Cops also found she was illegally packing heat.

A jury didn’t buy whatever story she was selling, convicting her in June 2023. She got slapped with an 8.5-year sentence in federal prison starting last March.

Fast forward to December 10, 2024. Yan was cooling her heels at the low-security Federal Correctional Institution Danbury in Connecticut. Around 7 p.m., a security alarm went off – Yan had flown the coop.

Her big escape lasted all of 45 minutes. Local police nabbed her shortly after she broke out and handed her right back over to prison officials.

Now, on top of her arson and gun sentence, Yan could get another five years tacked on for her failed prison break. The feds clearly aren’t amused by her little stunt.
