President Trump’s man in Moscow just spent a marathon five hours talking peace with Vladimir Putin, trying to hammer out a deal to finally end the war in Ukraine.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, met with the Russian leader and his top advisors last week in St. Petersburg. It’s the third time they’ve huddled since January, and Witkoff is talking up a potential breakthrough, saying a framework for “permanent peace” is taking shape.

Sources say the talks zeroed in on the fate of five territories currently under Russian control, though exactly which ones weren’t named. Moscow is sticking to its guns, demanding Ukraine ditch its dreams of joining NATO.
But it’s not just about land and alliances. Witkoff also pitched new U.S.-Russia business deals, hoping economic ties could help smooth things over and stabilize the region. It’s a classic Trump playbook move – mixing diplomacy with dollars.
Of course, it’s not a done deal. Ukraine’s President Zelensky has repeatedly sworn he won’t give up an inch of territory. Previous attempts to broker even a simple ceasefire have fizzled out.
Trump has consistently blamed the drawn-out conflict on the previous administration, calling it “Biden’s war.” Now, his team is pushing hard for a resolution, betting that direct talks and economic incentives can succeed where others failed. While Witkoff sounds optimistic, getting Kyiv and Moscow to sign on the dotted line remains a tall order.
