In a poignant moment for his administration, President Trump initiated his first cabinet meeting this past Wednesday, starting with a heartfelt prayer led by Scott Turner, the newly appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. This gathering not only marked a significant event in Trump’s presidency but also set a tone steeped in spirituality and reflection.

Turner’s invocation invoked scripture, saying, “Father the Bible says that blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. Father today we honor You in Your rightful place and thank You for giving us this opportunity to restore faith in this country and be a blessing to the people of America, and we pray in our meeting that You would be glorified in our conversation. In Jesus name, Amen,” to which the cabinet members responded with a resounding “Amen.”

This theme of faith has resurfaced stronger for Trump after a life-altering experience last summer during a campaign rally in Butler, PA, where he was nearly shot by an assailant. Reflecting on this, he shared, “None of us knows exactly when our time on earth will be over. You never know — a truth I confronted a few short months ago when there was an incident that … was not fun.” He has expressed that he believes divine intervention played a role in his survival, stating, “God was watching me.” This moment seems to have deepened his sense of belief, as he remarked, “It changed something in me. I feel even stronger.”
After the spiritual kickoff, the meeting shifted focus as Trump invited tech mogul Elon Musk to discuss some pressing operational issues regarding federal workers. Musk brought attention to a curious situation involving potentially deceased individuals still listed on the government payroll. “What we are trying to get to the bottom of is we think there are a number of people on the government payroll who are dead, which is probably why they can’t respond, and some people who are not real people and just like fictional individuals… some collecting paychecks… so we are literally just trying to figure out are these people real? Are they alive? And can they write an email?” he explained.
Out of approximately two million federal employees, Musk revealed that one million had responded to an email inquiry, triggering a serious initiative from the White House to reevaluate and possibly reduce staffing levels within federal agencies. Positions deemed unnecessary are set to be trimmed, as agencies have been tasked with submitting their plans for a “reduction in force” by March 13, making clear that those who fail to respond to the outreach could be facing job loss.
The cabinet meeting encapsulates the current climate within the administration as they navigate both faith and administrative challenges. As the nation watches closely, these developments signal a robust approach to governance intertwined with a strong emphasis on accountability and spiritual guidance.
