The Trump administration has taken a significant step by removing a webpage that provided guidance on changing sex identification on Social Security cards.
This move aligns with their intention to endorse a more traditional interpretation of biological sex in federal policies.
Interestingly, an archived snapshot from January 14 shows that the Social Security Administration once included detailed instructions for individuals wanting to amend their sex designation on their cards.
It even stated that no medical or legal proof was necessary to make such changes.
Back then, people could switch their identification to male or female, with hopes of introducing a non-binary option down the line.
The now-defunct webpage also catered to trans and gender-fluid individuals, outlining the process to request a “replacement social security card” with updated information.
Under the Biden administration, the view had been that gender is multifaceted and recognizes the ability to change gender identities.
Before the site was taken down, the information could be accessed through a dedicated section on the Social Security Administration’s homepage under “Record.”
Since President Trump took office, this guidance for changing sex identification has vanished from the site.
Currently, the only available resources are for name changes, updating contact details, changing citizenship status, or reporting a death.
The policy allowing changes to sex identification was introduced in October 2022, during the Biden administration, and aimed to simplify the process.
At that time, Kilolo Kijakazi, the Acting Social Security Commissioner, emphasized the importance of self-selection in record-keeping.
In an archived blog post, Kijakazi stated this approach was part of the Social Security Administration’s broader “Equity Action Plan.”
However, that blog post now leads to a “404 Error – Article Not Found,” suggesting it has also been taken down.
This removal follows an executive order signed by Trump, titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”
This order mandates a two-gender recognition by the federal government, explicitly defining sex as an unchangeable biological classification.
According to the order, “male” and “female” are stipulated based on reproductive roles established at conception.
Additionally, the executive order tasks the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services with providing further guidance on these newly defined sexual categorizations.
