ABC News settles Trump defamation lawsuit for $16 million following Stephanopoulos claims

ABC News has reached a substantial settlement in a defamation lawsuit brought by former President Donald Trump.

The network will pay a total of $16 million, which includes a $15 million contribution to Trump’s presidential library and $1 million in legal fees.

This case stemmed from comments made earlier in the year by ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos, who incorrectly stated that Trump had been found “liable for rape.”

The contentious remarks were made during a heated March interview with Rep. Nancy Mace, where Stephanopoulos pressed her on her support for Trump amidst her own experiences as a rape victim.

During that exchange, Stephanopoulos said, “Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape and for defaming the victim of that rape.” Mace responded fiercely, countering that Trump was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil case, not rape, and criticized Stephanopoulos for attempting to shame her.

Following the interview, Mace publicly shared footage of the discussion, labeling Stephanopoulos as a “Clinton crony turned fake journalist.”

Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, argued that Stephanopoulos demonstrated “actual malice” in making his claims, which public figures must prove for defamation.

Brito insisted that Stephanopoulos knew his statements were false, noting this should be enough to substantiate the defamation claim. ABC News spokesperson Jeannie Kedas confirmed the settlement agreement, stating they were pleased to resolve the matter.

Interestingly, Stephanopoulos also deactivated his X account shortly after the settlement was announced and did not mention the situation on his recent show episode.
