Senate chaplain Barry Black hospitalized due to brain injury but on road to recovery

U.S. Senate Chaplain Barry Black has been admitted to the hospital after experiencing a subdural hematoma, which is a type of bleeding that occurs near the brain following a head injury.

According to a statement from his office, Dr. Brian Monahan, the Capitol Physician, provided immediate care after Chaplain Black faced a medical emergency.

The Rev. Lisa Shultz, chief of staff for the Senate Chaplain, confirmed the news and expressed hope for his recovery, stating, “We expect a smooth recovery.”

Shultz has since appealed for prayers for Black and his family during this challenging time.

Pastor Ted Wilson, president of the Seventh-day Adventist World Church, urged his followers to pray for Black’s full recovery via social media.

Wilson also shared that he had sent a prayer message through another pastor and was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from Black himself while in the hospital.

In their conversation, Black thanked Wilson for his prayers and recounted how he felt blessed by divine intervention during this health scare.

Wilson praised Dr. Monahan’s quick thinking, which led to the phone call that helped Black get the urgent medical attention he needed.

He noted that Black is doing well and may be able to celebrate Christmas with his family soon.

Chaplain Black, who is 76, has held the position for 21 years, making him the first African American and the first Seventh-day Adventist to serve in this role.

Prior to his appointment, he had a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of rear admiral and serving as the chief of Navy chaplains.

His nomination came from then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, transitioning into this significant role in the Senate.

Reflecting on his life experiences, Black often attributes his guidance and resilience to his mother’s firm Christian upbringing, which helped steer him away from violence during his turbulent youth.

Having grown up in a low-income household, he emphasized the importance of Christian education and revealed how that foundation shaped his lifelong commitment to ministry.

Black’s journey, marked by faith and determination, illustrates his belief that divine guidance has been present throughout his life’s paths.
