Trump nominates Harmeet Dhillon as assistant attorney general for civil rights at DOJ

President-elect Donald Trump recently announced the nomination of Harmeet K. Dhillon as the assistant attorney general for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice.

At 55 years old, if confirmed, Dhillon would be instrumental in upholding voting rights and civil liberties across the nation, a point that Trump emphasized in his announcement. In his statement, Trump praised Dhillon’s commitment to civil liberties, noting her efforts against Big Tech for censoring free speech and her advocacy for Christians banned from praying in groups during COVID.

“Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished Civil Liberties,” Trump remarked.

He further stated that she is among the leading election lawyers in the U.S., dedicated to ensuring that only valid votes are counted. Dhillon seemed both thrilled and honored by the nomination, expressing her excitement to contribute to the country’s civil rights agenda.

She took to social media to share her gratitude, mentioning her dreams of serving the nation and acknowledging her family’s unwavering support throughout her journey.

Dhillon, hailing from India and a practicing Sikh, has built a notable presence within legal and political arenas over the years. A former vice chair of the California GOP, she has been an advocate for both free speech and religious freedom.

Her credentials include a degree from Dartmouth College and a law degree from the University of Virginia, along with a clerkship at the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Dhillon’s legal work has attracted attention, particularly for representing conservative groups like the Berkeley College Republicans and a Google engineer who lost his job for critiquing the company’s diversity approach.

She gained further recognition by launching lawsuits challenging various COVID-19 policies in California back in 2020.

Aside from her legal battles, Dhillon has also made a mark in the Republican National Committee, serving as the RNC National Committeewoman for California and as a Vice Chairwoman. After emigrating to the U.S. as a child, Dhillon broke new ground in 2016 by leading a Sikh prayer at the Republican National Convention.

Most recently, she repeated this feat at the 2024 convention, where her prayer drew a variety of reactions from attendees.

During her prayer, Dhillon emphasized her immigrant roots, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity within the party. She spoke about the importance of her faith being represented and welcomed within political discourse, especially as the party looks to broaden its appeal.

Such representation matters, she believes, as it signals to diverse communities that their voices and votes are valued in the Republican fold.
