Texas pastor returns to lead services after sexual assault charges and three-month absence

A Texas pastor has made his return to the pulpit after a notable absence of three months due to serious legal troubles involving allegations of sexual assault and indecent assault against a female church member. Ronnie Goines, who leads Koinonia Christian Church in Arlington, resumed his pastoral duties during a Bible study session, as well as a Sunday service, although he did not comment on the accusations during his reappearance.

Goines took to the church stage last Thursday, and excitement was palpable as he shared that he had been looking forward to this “revival” for weeks. In a promotional video shared on YouTube, his return was celebrated by church members eager to welcome him back, despite the troubling allegations surrounding his departure.

The allegations that led to his arrest stem from incidents reported in March 2023. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, a female member of his congregation claimed that Goines made unwanted advances toward her, including attempts to kiss her and inappropriately touch her during private encounters. She sought police assistance in late July, which ultimately resulted in Goines surrendering to authorities in Tarrant County.

Upon his surrender, Goines faced one count of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. He posted a $20,000 bond for the sexual assault charge and an additional $3,000 for the indecent assault charge before being released from jail. Despite the serious nature of these allegations, Goines maintains that his interactions with the woman were consensual, asserting that their exchanges were limited to hugging rather than any inappropriate behavior.

During Sunday service, Goines expressed heartfelt gratitude towards James Ray Taylor, the church’s executive pastor, who had announced his resignation just a week prior, stating it was at the request of Goines and church leadership. Goines openly thanked Taylor for his support during a challenging time, reflecting a sense of unity within the church leadership as they navigate this complex situation.

Adding to the support for Goines, Pastor R.A. Vernon encouraged the congregation to not quickly dismiss leaders in the church, emphasizing the importance of understanding and redemption, even in the face of serious allegations. “I’m not justifying certain behavior. I really am not. But for you to make me give up on my past, you have to show me something real,” Vernon stated during the Bible study session.

As Goines reinstates his presence in the church community, the atmosphere remains mixed with anticipation and concern among congregants. His previous roles included serving as a chaplain for the Arlington Police Department and co-chairing the Arlington Unity Council, showcasing his prominent position in the local community prior to the events that led to his arrest. The ongoing dialogue within the church appears to be focused on forgiveness and understanding as they progress through these challenging times.
