After nearly two decades of hardship, Pastor David Lin has finally returned to the United States, finding freedom from years of imprisonment in China. The California pastor had been a regular visitor to China since the 1990s, where he aimed to spread his faith.
Lin’s legal troubles began in 2006 during his efforts to establish a Christian training center in Beijing, an initiative that did not align with the strict regulations enforced by Chinese authorities. In China, local churches are mandated to align with the ruling Communist Party, and deviation from this expectation can lead to severe consequences.
Despite maintaining his innocence, Lin was sentenced to a life term in 2009 on charges of fraud, a tactic often used to silence religious leaders who operate outside government-sanctioned boundaries.
Joy exploded through Lin’s family last weekend as his daughter, Alice Lin, shared the uplifting news via text to Bob Fu, the founder of China Aid, a group dedicated to advocating for those persecuted in China. “Praise God! We got the call late last night!!! Dad is free and over Alaska now,” she announced, illustrating the profound relief that this news brought to them.
Advocates for Lin, such as Nizar Zakka of Hostage Aid Worldwide, celebrated his release as a landmark event. He remarked, “The release of David Lin marks a significant moment. After 18 years of suffering, his return to his loved ones serves as a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of those who never lose hope.” His sentiment highlights the collective efforts and unwavering support from his family and advocates during this challenging journey.
Confirmation of the pastor’s return came from Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the State Department, who expressed, “We welcome David Lin’s release from prison in the People’s Republic of China. He has returned to the United States and reunited with his family for the first time in nearly 20 years.”
